Mobile communication services using high-altitude platform stations (HAPSs) are promising for expanding service coverage and providing communication infrastructure during disasters. A HAPS communication system consists of a feeder link between a gateway station and a HAPS, and a service link between the HAPS and user terminals. Since the feeder link must accommodate the aggregate traffic of all terminals served through the service link, high-capacity transmission is required. In this paper, we develop a prototype radio unit for a feeder link that achieves high-capacity transmission using line-of-sight multiple-input multiple-output (LoS-MIMO) technology, and evaluate its fundamental performance.
