Traffic burstiness is a critical characteristic in the design and performance evaluation of network systems. Traditionally, burstiness has been discussed in terms of packet counts or traffic volume. However, similar bursty behavior is also observed in the number of flow arrivals. A sudden burst in flow arrivals can lead to memory exhaustion and performance degradation in stateful systems, such as NAT and firewalls, which must maintain flow states. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of such bursts. In this paper, we quantitatively analyze flow-level burstiness using real traffic traces.
