Recent advances in quantum computers and quantum communication technologies have accelerated research toward the realization of quantum networks worldwide. Since quantum networks exploit quantum-mechanical phenomena such as entanglement and quantum teleportation, they require network architectures that differ fundamentally from those of conventional communication networks. Furthermore, to support a wide range of applications, including distributed quantum computing and quantum sensing, quantum networks must provide scalable and flexible architectures. This article provides an overview of recent research trends and challenges in quantum network technologies and their architectures.
