[BI-6-02]NTT Software Innovation Center's Efforts toward Realizing Space Data Centers

Terrestrial data centers face constraints on power, cooling, and land, and the rapid growth of AI demand is accelerating these problems. Anticipating this challenge early, NTT proposed a "Space Data Center" concept in 2022 that leverages geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites. This paper reviews NTT Software Innovation Center's efforts toward space data centers and surveys the recent global surge in on-orbit computing infrastructure. NTT's approach is distinguished by its focus on GEO-based data relay and processing together with near-real-time transmission, setting it apart from projects that pursue the launch of large-scale GPU computing into orbit. We also describe the positioning and results of a recently conducted on-orbit demonstration.
