Optical connectors are essential for building optical communication networks. To connect MCF using a connector, it is necessary not only to align the axes of the optical fibers being connected but also to precisely match their angles around the axis. Optical connectors for MCFs present unique challenges: in the case of symplex connectors, those with a floating ferrule structure allow for angular freedom around the axis, making it impossible to precisely position each core; in the case of multifiber connectors, each MCF in each port must be individually aligned.
In this paper, we first describe the overview of MCF, which is nearing practical application, and the technologies applicable to MCF while adhering to the basic principles of single-mode fiber connectors. We then outline the application areas and standardization trends for the near future.
