Ka-band communication can offer a wide bandwidth and a high data rate. However, it suffers from serious propagation loss, rain attenuation, and blockage. Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) uses low loss optical fiber for signal distribution to reduce loss during long-distance wireless transmission. To support receiver front-ends for RoF applications, this presentation introduces a 25.7➖34.2-GHz low-noise-amplifier (LNA) for driving a Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) driver in 28-nm CMOS. The design features a small chip area and relatively high IP1dB (1dB compression point) for high output swing requirement from RoF applications. Post-layout simulation results demonstrate 11.9dB peak gain, 8.5GHz 3-dB bandwidth, 2.59–3.72dB noise figure within the operating frequency range, and -6.7dBm IP1dB. It consumes 16.1mW of power from a 0.9V supply voltage, and occupies a core area of 0.097mm2.
