Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a technology that enables wireless power delivery to drones, IoT devices, and lunar and Martian exploration vehicles, and is one of the emerging energy solutions. In particular, millimeter-wave WPT using beamforming has attracted attention in recent years because of its advantages in system miniaturization. On the other hand, at 24 GHz, which is a representative frequency band used for millimeter-wave WPT, the efficiency degradation of high-power amplifiers remains a challenge. Furthermore, because beamforming-based millimeter-wave WPT employs a large number of amplifiers, the amplifiers are required to be robust against process variations. In this report, we present the design and measurement results of a 24-GHz GaN MMIC amplifier for millimeter-wave WPT, featuring high robustness to process variations and high efficiency.
