This paper presents a new infinite phase shifter using current-output digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with tapped load resistors. By adding the tapped load resistors to the DAC outputs, the proposed phase shifter achieves infinite phase control over a full scale of 360 degrees with an 8-bit resolution, as well as reducing the number of DACs by half. A prototype vector sum phase shifter exhibits linear 360-degree phase control characteristics for 8-bit phase control word k from 0 to 255, and the measured root mean square (RMS) phase error was 5.4 degrees for a 2.5 GHz continuous wave (CW) without any digital pre-calculation.
