This research develops a novel photoswitchable technique for selectively separating lanthanide ions from high-level radioactive liquid wastes to enhance sustainability. Utilizing custom-synthesized spiropyran-based SP@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles, the method addresses traditional limitations by controlling metal ion catch and release entirely via alternating ultraviolet and visible light irradiation, effectively eliminating toxic chemical eluents. Successful material synthesis was confirmed through detailed spectroscopic analysis. Performance evaluations demonstrated that ultraviolet light achieved nearly 100% adsorption from dilute solutions, while visible light, assisted by thermal heating, facilitated desorption rates exceeding 17%. By effectively minimizing secondary waste generation, this innovative light-driven approach validates a crucial proof-of-concept, offering a promising and sustainable platform for advancing future nuclear fuel reprocessing operations.
