Planetarium、Media、Definition
There are so many ways to define the planetarium: by its technologies (opto-mechanic, digital), embedded topics (science, art), functions (education, concert, art experience, reception room), objectives (education, entertainment), the variety of the public, the roles of operators (mediator, technician, lecturer), the nature of the experience.
So, at a time when planetariums are multi-purpose room, reconsider the question -What is a planetarium?- is more relevant than ever before.
In our Ph. D. thesis we suggest reviewing and formalizing the definition of a planetarium with a theorical approach: the exhibition-media model of Jean Davallon (1999). How can the planetarium be defined as a media? How does defining it as such enable us to understand its specific characteristics for the mediation of astronomy? We answer these questions by drawing on Davallon's model according to three criteria: the instrumental fact, the social fact, the semiotic fact. We will define each criterion, explain why it can be applied to the planetarium, and so, why the planetarium can be defined as a media.
The aim of the presentation is to bring debates and have collective thinking about the characteristics of planetariums.
