What happens when our devices reach the sensory boundaries of the here and now? Humanity is wired live to the planet like never before, aware of not only social events but also celestial phenomena, weather patterns, animal migrations, consequences of material overuse, and many kinds of data that reveal fluctuations in planetary health. This accumulation of information echoes into our bodies expanding our very existence as creatures in time and space. On the other hand, planetarium experiences have expanded our reality by going into space that is magnitudes of scale larger than the nearby topography of where each of us is on planet Earth.
In this context, the need arises to ground experiences to these expanded realities, not as a distant story, a spectacle or a lesson, but rather a visceral interaction with representations that accommodate actual observation and reflection.
Through my years of research I have been fortunate to navigate design in relation to architecture, studying Virtual Reality, and then working for many years at the Adler Planetarium within the astronomy department, a job I took because of my interest in embodiment of larger scales. In that role I presented scientific visualization to the public, mentored students in the sciences and gave talks to specific interest groups in film and the arts. I also worked on Hawai’i island where I was able to access cultural knowledge that is deeply aware of planetary dynamics.
This presentation will propose a potential framework to connect planetarium developments to the experience of the public, particularly adults who grew up with media boundaries from which we have already moved past, and instead augment the understanding of scientific and aesthetic issues of visualization.
