In recent years, in Nagano Prefecture, we have been advancing activities to utilize the universe as a tourism and educational resource, under the concept “Nagano – Japan’s Astronomy Prefecture”.
Furthermore, since 2022, as part of the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics “Citizen Science Project”, we have been organizing special exhibitions and producing planetarium programs themed around astronomy and citizen science in Nagano Prefecture.
In 2022, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Suwa Astronomy Club, considered the oldest amateur astronomy club in Japan, special exhibitions and planetarium programs were produced. Since then, activities have continued each year with different themes.
The themes were solar observation and variable star observation by citizen in 2023, Japanese star names in 2024, and the Sun and aurora in 2025.
These activities involve research, exhibitions, and program production through collaboration with individuals and organizations possessing diverse interests and perspectives.
This presentation introduces the activities in Nagano Prefecture characterized by the two features described above.
