The Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA) has been operating a network of mobile planetariums since 2010. NOVA’s goal is to give every child in the Netherlands an unforgettable science experience during their school career. As such, the NOVA Mobile Planetarium primarily visits schools. In 15 years, the project has reached more than 600,000 students and their teachers across the country. However, analysis of visitor data revealed that certain areas of the Netherlands are structurally missed. As with many public engagement endeavours, these include underserved neighbourhoods in cities and highly rural areas, particularly in locations far from the most densely populated region along the west coast of the country. In order to address this inequality, NOVA created an action plan and sought funding to achieve these goals. In this presentation we will discuss NOVA’s approach, from understanding the reasons why the project struggles to reach certain groups and areas within the Netherlands, to a strategic plan for structurally increasing inclusivity in the future.
