How did a small planetarium, whose annual footfall never rose over 70,000, manage networks that stretched around the world? This paper uses Armagh Planetarium as a case study to examine how trends within the international and local environments affected the dynamics at the only Planetarium in Northern Ireland during a period of intense cultural and political violence. By examining the cultivation, portrayal and transactions of these networks, this paper will provide a model of the layered nature of networks developed by individuals who worked at, and supported the Armagh Planetarium. This paper relies on Oral History interviews, archival material and media to interrogate and map these networks, outlining the individuals and the larger movements involved. In turn they influenced, and were influenced, by Armagh Planetarium and this paper will use the transactional nature of their interactions to cast light on the development of the planetarium as tool of escapism in a deeply divided society.
