Over the past decade, Fiske Planetarium has explored the integration of live theatre into the full dome immersive space of the planetarium. Productions have included “Vera Rubin: Bringing the Dark to Light" in a 2016 collaboration with the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company and "Voyagers! A Musical Grand Tour of the Solar System" in a 2020 collaboration with Matheatre. Since the premiere of Voyagers! in 2021, Matheatre has performed the production in other planetariums in the US and would like to bring the performance to international full dome theaters as the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Voyager spacecraft approaches in Fall 2027.
Fiske has also produced full dome assets in collaboration with creator, playwright, and filmmaker Rebecca-Sophia Strong to support productions of a live full dome theatrical performance titled "Cosmogenesis: The Story of Us," which premiered at the Versant Power Astronomy Center in Fall 2025. Strong plans to collaborate with planetariums across the globe on future performances of this story of belonging within our Universe.
In each of the above, the full dome environment has been used to provide a novel, interactive, digitally immersive theatre set for live performers to act, sing, and dance and for audiences to engage with both the dome and live theater. The poster will highlight each of the above theatrical pieces and reflect upon the development and production of live theatrical ventures in the full dome environment.
