[SP-JP2-04]Public Observatories as Living Museums: The Role of the JAPOS Network in Science, Community, and Wellbeing

Public observatories in Japan represent a distinctive model of science communication that goes beyond traditional research and exhibition. Here, “public” refers not to ownership, but to openness—facilities designed for public access and participation. They can be understood as “living museums,” where the night sky serves as a dynamic, real-time exhibit experienced directly by visitors.
This presentation introduces the role of the Japan Public Observatory Society as a national network connecting public observatories across Japan. Through training programs that cultivate skilled facilitators of astronomy experiences, along with outreach activities, JAPOS supports a shared framework that links science with community engagement.
Focusing on science, community, and wellbeing, the talk explores how real-sky experiences foster scientific literacy and evoke awe, contributing to human wellbeing. By presenting practical examples, this session seeks to share perspectives from Japan and engage in international dialogue on how astronomy experiences connect science, community, and human wellbeing across cultures.
