[CSY6-1]Guideline-Directed Treatment of Ischemic Heart Disease

Faisal G. Bakaeen, MD, is Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and holds the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Distinguished Chair in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He serves as Surgical Director of the Coronary Center at the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic.
Previously, Dr. Bakaeen was Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and a faculty member at Baylor College of Medicine. He also chaired the VA Surgical Quality Data Use Group and served on the Surgical Advisory Board overseeing clinical operations across 44 VA cardiac surgery centers.
Dr. Bakaeen earned his medical degree from the University of Cambridge School of Medicine(Cambridge, UK). He completed his general surgery residency at Mayo Clinic, followed by a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine.
He maintains a high-volume clinical practice and has performed more than 6,000 cardiac operations. His areas of expertise include multi-arterial and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting, as well as complex valve and aortic surgery. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award and the Fulbright Jaworski Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from Baylor College of Medicine. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and serves on multiple editorial boards. He has held leadership roles in major clinical trials, including ROOBY, REGROUP, and EXACT, and has chaired several professional clinical practice guidelines.
Dr. Bakaeen is a member of the American Surgical Association and serves as Co-Chair of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery(AATS)Clinical Practice and Standards Committee, as well as a member of the AATS Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Executive Council of the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society(ECTSS). His prior leadership roles include Treasurer and President of the Association of VA Surgeons; Chair of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Workforce on Evidence-Based Surgery; member of the Board of Directors of the AATS Foundation; and Councilor of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.
