台風は大雨・暴風・高潮・高波をもたらし、しばしば大きな災害を引き起こす。したがって台風進路・強度・降水に関わる現象の理解や予測の高度化は地球惑星科学上の重要な課題である。また、気候変動に伴う台風の強度や発生数の変化についても、データレスキューやデータ解析、大規模シミュレーションによって研究が進められている。航空機観測プロジェクトやひまわり8・9号、ドローンなどの新しい観測機器と高速計算機など科学技術の進展により、メカニズムの理解と数値予報に関する研究が新たな展開を見せ始めている。日本気象学会との共催で開かれる本セッションでは、台風に関わる幅広いトピックについて発表を募集し、今後の台風研究の方向性を探る。
