Maintaining good oral health in aging is an important challenge worldwide. In the 1980s, Peter Laslett (1915–2001) categorized life into four ages, with the third being the “crown of life”—a post-retirement era of personal achievement and fulfillment. In this century of living to 100, life continues well beyond retirement, highlighting the importance of healthy aging to enjoy a prolonged crown of life. Although oral health is a fundamental component of healthy aging and well-being, challenges to improving oral health and treating and preventing oral diseases in older adults remain. In recent years, “deep tech,” which refers to highly sophisticated technologies that are deeply rooted in advanced scientific principles and cutting-edge inventions, is becoming a driving force in offering innovative solutions to a wide range of challenges. Regenerative and precision medicine-based approaches can not only restore missing oral function but also prevent or slow the progression of chronic dental diseases that often ruin the crown of life. In this presentation, I will discuss the immense potential of deep-tech innovations in oral health for healthy aging by introducing the various fields of such technology, including biotechnology, advanced materials, and artificial intelligence for wearable devices.
