When generating diffraction-limited optical focal spots through an objective lens, there is generally a trade-off between the size of the focal spot (i.e., spatial resolution) and the field of view over which the focal spot can be scanned. For example, a 20× objective lens a spatial resolution of 0.5 μm only provides a field-of-view of around 1 mm. As an approach to overcome this inherent trade-off relation, I will present a technique of ultra-wide-field and high-speed optical focus control using complex wavefront shaping that I have been working on. I will show that the proposed technique enables an optical focusing with a spatial resolution of 0.5 μm and a field-of-view of around 10 mm, which were not feasible with standard objective lenses.
