A scalable and single-step method exploiting capillary interactions for creating sub-100nm non-coalescent metallic(Ga) nanodroplets on Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a bio-compatible elastomeric substrate, is shown herein. The nanoscale gap between Gallium nanodroplets thus formed allows for spectrally dependent electric field enhancement, owing to plasmon hybridization of neighboring Ga nanodroplets. The substrate, PDMS, allows not only for gap tuneability but also actively participates in determining the Ga nanosphere sizes. It thus enables numerous potential technologies involving mechanochromic sensing and display applications. The structural colors formed by this method cover a large gamut in the chromaticity coordinates, and the mechanochromic sensor thus fabricated exhibits excellent reliability of up to as large as 10^4 periodic cycles.
