ITO nanoparticles (ITO NPs) and eco-friendly carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated to form a hybrid thin film (ITO_CDs) as a coating material for windows to block Near-infra red (NIR) and Ultra-violet (UV) radiation while maintaining transparency in the visible region. Carbon dots act as an excellent blocker of harmful UV-A (315-400 nm) radiation while promoting aggregation of ITO NPs due to the presence of free functional groups to the carbon core that bind the nanoparticles together. This leads to a porous ITO_CDs film. The cavity like pores increase light matter interactions thereby improving NIR absorption. Further enhancement in NIR absorption was achieved by vacuum annealing the ITO_CDs hybrid thin film in a hydrogen atmosphere. This led to increased oxygen vacancies, increasing the concentration of free electrons leading to enhanced NIR absorption. The solar blocking efficiency of ITO_CDs hybrid thin film was 71% and 84% in NIR and UV region respectively with a transparency of 70% in the visible. Solar light blocking in UV and NIR with visible transparency enables applications of ITO_CDs thin film as effective window and skylight coatings.
