We provide a straightforward method to study vortex profiles through light reflection on liquid surfaces by integrating an optical system with image processing techniques. An expanded and collimated laser beam is targeted onto the liquid surfaces, and a camera records the reflected beam data on an observation screen. The liquid vortex parameters are determined by analyzing the relationship between the incident beam widths and the reflected beam diameters. In the experiment, an iris diaphragm and a beam expander created different incident beam diameters in a range of 10–19 mm. We examine the parabolic shape of liquid vortices in a rotating cylinder using a saline solution and propylene glycol at an angular velocity of 15 rad/s. The results show similar vortex shapes for both solutions under identical conditions, with the vortex surface shape closely resembling a parabola (R² ≥ 99%). The approach shows promise for practical use in characterizing liquid vortices using inexpensive optical devices.
