Automation

Materials informatics, which predicts material properties through computational modeling, has need for experimental validation. This work reports on developing an automated arc-melting system for alloy synthesis, utilizing the Robot Operating System (ROS2) for a modular and adaptable setup. Key components such as cooling water flow, air/Ar pressure, and electric arc control have been successfully tested. The synthesis process involves initiating an arc on Zr as an oxygen trap, moving it to the raw material mixture, cooling, flipping, and re-melting for homogeneity, with numerous parameters like discharge power and arc radius optimized. The system has successfully produced several superconducting samples, demonstrating its potential for high-throughput and reproducible production, aiding in discovering new superconducting materials with enhanced properties and broader applications.
