Laser trapping is a non-contact technique that allows us to manipulate micro or nano sized objects, such as nanoparticles, protein assembly, and even living cells. Our group has reported that a large assembly of gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) was prepared by laser trapping at the glass/solution interface, we named this phenomenon as optically evolved swarming. The possible formation mechanism of the swarming is considered originating from the mutual scattering of optical binding systems inside and outside the focus with the characteristic of arc-shaped localizations with half-wavelength periodicity. In the previous work, we have demonstrated that the uni-directional scattering and arc-shaped distribution are obtained after averaging the intensity of the entire movie in the presence of lithography patterned Au nanodisks.Here for a 3D understanding of these phenomenna, a homemade prism which splits the imaging signals into eight planes along the depth dimension is deployed. The arc-shaped distribution in 3D is retrieved after analyzing the arc among eight planes. Hence, the 3D morphology of the uni-directional swarming with Au nanodisks is revealed. We believe that these results provide an insight into the optical binding system outside the irradiation area at ensembled stage.
