Ferrimagnetic Mn4N films are promising candidates for spintronic applications. We have previously reported the epitaxial growth of Mn4N thin films on various substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Mn4N epitaxial films grown on SrTiO3(001) substrates exhibited a high squareness ratio and low coercivity, whereas those grown on MgO(001) substrates showde inferior magnetic properties due to large lattice mismatches. However, MgO is more advantageous than SrTiO3 in terms of thermal conductivity and cost. Therefore, we investigated the effect of growth conditions on properties of Mn4N films on MgO(001) substrates. The crystalline quality and magnetic properties of the films were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurement, respectively. The results indicate that the optimal substrate temperature is 750 degrees celsius. In the presentation, we will also discuss the optimized growth conditions and magnetic properties of 10-nm-thick epitaxial Mn4N films.
