This study proposes a heat-concentrating metasurface (MS) to improve thermoelectric power generation. Conventional thermoelectric devices require a temperature difference between two electrodes, and previous metamaterial thermoelectric conversion required direct fabrication of a metamaterial structure on the device electrode. To solve this fabrication issue, the proposed MS is placed outside the device. The MS consists of patterned copper domains on a glass substrate and concentrates heat toward the center due to the difference in thermal conductivity between copper and glass. When a thermoelectric device was placed at the center, the output voltage increased with the high-temperature stage temperature. The MS achieved an 8.1% higher output voltage than a plain glass reference substrate. Thermographic images also showed that the MS produced a larger temperature difference across the device, confirming its heat-concentrating effect and its ability to enhance thermoelectric performance.
