In-plane exciton polaritons (IEPs) in monolayer van der Waals materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, offer a pathway to extreme electromagnetic field confinement with low losses. In this deep-subwavelength regime, the spatial variation of the electromagnetic field becomes comparable to intrinsic length scales such as the exciton wavefunction extent or its coherence length, rendering the conventional local response approximation insufficient. We present a theoretical analysis of IEPs that explicitly accounts for the nonlocal optical response. Our findings demonstrate that nonlocality fundamentally alters the dispersion relations and polariton propagation lengths, providing essential insights for the design of future nanophotonic devices.
