[IS1-1]High Resolution Pharyngeal Manometry as a Biofeedback Tool for Oropharyngeal Dysphagia
○Ashli K. O’Rourke (Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina, USA)
Dr. Ashli K. O’Rourke, MD, MS, is Professor of Otolaryngology, Director of Laryngology,and the Mark and Evelyn Trammell Endowed Chair in Otolaryngology at the Medical Universityof South Carolina (MUSC). Uniquely trained as both a speech-language pathologist andfellowship-trained laryngologist, she brings a multidisciplinary approach to the careof patients with voice, swallowing, and airway disorders.
Dr. O’Rourke is internationally recognized for her work in high-resolution pharyngealmanometry and swallowing physiology and has contributed to the development of internationalstandards for quantitative swallowing assessment. Her research has been supportedthrough industry and collaborative funding and has resulted in numerous peer-reviewedpublications, invited lectureships, and national and international presentations.
Dr. O’Rourke currently serves as President of the Dysphagia Research Society (2026–2027).Her national leadership experience includes membership on the Exam Council of theAmerican Board of Otolaryngology, where she continues as an Oral Examiner. She wasa founding member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Voice, Airway & SwallowingEducation and has held numerous leadership roles within the Fall Voice community.

○Reza Shaker (Medical College of Wisconsin, USA)
Professor Shaker is an internationally recognized gastroenterologist for his researchand clinical expertise in the fields of dysphagia and reflux disease. He is a Professorof Medicine, Radiology, and Otolaryngology.
Professor Shaker’s research has been funded continuously by the United States’ NationalInstitute of Health (NIH) since 1992 and has led to some of the seminal discoveriesin the area of airway protection against aspiration which has opened new avenues ofinvestigation and treatment for patients with swallowing disorders and gastroesophagealreflux disease.
His research has led to development of rehabilitative exercises for upper esophagealsphincter dysphagia; the Shaker Exercise, now part of the clinical armamentarium world-widefor treating dysphagic patients, development of the FDA approved “Reza Band/RefluxBand” a UES Assist Device for preventing reflux of gastric content into the pharynxand aspiration in patients with airway complications of reflux disease and developmentof the technique of trans-nasal un-sedated upper GI endoscopy (T-EGD) for concurrentout-patient evaluation of the aerodigestive tract and the esophagus.
He has published over 300 original papers and edited or co-edited a number of textbooksincluding the highly used “Principles of Deglutition”. He has trained over 60 Gastroenterologistswho are currently in practice in 24 states in the United States in addition to over20 Academicians from around the globe some of whom currently in leadership positions.
