The Future of Occupational Health - what can we expect? 

Medicine is a field that seeks to make a rational assessment of a person’s health. Risk assessment in occupational health is also a way of predicting future health effects. So, how will occupational health in Japan change in the years ahead? 
Today, the environment surrounding work is rapidly changing. Technological innovation, changes in population structure, geopolitical factors, and economic uncertainty are transforming jobs and ways of working and are also reshaping the challenges that occupational health must address. We now need to respond to an aging workforce, mental health, climate change, emerging infectious diseases, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), well-being, and new health risks related to technologies such as AI and robotics. Occupational health is no longer limited to safety and health management within companies. It is also becoming a foundation that supports the sustainability of society as a whole. 
Japan experienced rapid economic growth from the 1960s to the 1980s, but in recent years its growth has slowed. In contrast, Singapore is now one of the most economically advanced countries in Asia. Its GDP per capita is 94,000 US dollars, more than 2.5 times that of Japan, and it continues to grow. In such a society, how are workplaces and work itself changing? What new risks may appear in the future? And what role should occupational health professionals play? 
Our speaker today, Professor David Koh, is a leading researcher who has long worked at the forefront of occupational medicine and public health in Asia. He has also been involved in editing an international-level textbook of occupational medicine. His work covers areas such as occupational cancer, respiratory disease, skin disease, and chemical risks. He has also addressed issues related to migrant workers, construction and logistics, and infectious disease risks in the context of rapid industrialization and the expansion of global supply chains across Asia. In addition, he has worked on topics that reflect changes in our time, including risks related to nanomaterials and new industries, infection control for healthcare workers, responses to SARS and COVID-19, and occupational safety in Industry 4.0. Another important feature of his work is that he has helped develop occupational health not only as a clinical field, but also as a field connected with public health and national policy. 
In today’s lecture, Professor Koh will discuss how occupational health may develop in the future, and how it can support both people and society in this time of rapid technological and social change, from a practical perspective. 

産業保健の未来―今後の展望 

医療は、対象者の健康状態を合理的に推定しようとする学問です。産業保健におけるリスクアセスメントもまた、健康影響の将来予測にほかなりません。それでは、日本の産業保健は、これからどのような姿へと変化していくのでしょうか。 
いま、働くことを取り巻く環境は大きく変わりつつあります。技術革新、人口構造の変化、地政学的要因、経済的不確実性は、雇用や働き方を変えるとともに、産業保健が向き合うべき課題にも変化をもたらしています。高齢化する労働力、メンタルヘルス、気候変動、新興感染症、多様性・公平性・包摂性（diversity, equity, inclusion: DEI）、ウェルビーイング、さらには AI やロボティクスなどの新技術に伴う新たな健康リスクへの対応が求められています。産業保健は、企業内の安全衛生管理にとどまらず、社会全体の持続可能性を支える基盤としての役割を担いつつあります。
日本は 1960 年代から 1980 年代にかけて急速な経済成長を遂げてきましたが、近年は成長の鈍化が指摘されています。一方、シンガポールは、現在、アジアで最高の経済水準にあり、1 人当たり GDP は 9.4 万米ドルと、日本の 2.5 倍を超えてなお成長を続けています。そのような社会において、職場や労働はどのように変化しているのでしょうか。将来、どのようなリスクが新たに生じるのでしょうか。そして、そのとき産業保健専門職はいかなる役割を果たすべきなのでしょうか。
本日の講演者である David Koh 先生は、アジアにおける産業医学・公衆衛生分野を長年牽引してこられた研究者であり、国際水準の産業医学教科書の編集にも携わっておられます。職業がん、呼吸器疾患、皮膚疾患、化学物質リスクといった領域に加え、アジア各国の急速な工業化とグローバルサプライチェーンの拡大の中で、移民労働者、建設・物流、感染症リスクといった課題にも取り組んでこられました。さらに、ナノマテリアルや新興産業に伴うリスク、医療従事者の感染対策、SARS や COVID-19 への対応、Industry 4.0 と労働安全など、時代の変化に即したテーマについても研究と実践を重ねてこられています。また、産業保健を臨床の枠にとどめず、国家レベルの公衆衛生や政策と結びつけて発展させてこられた点も先生の大きな特徴です。
本日の講演では、こうした急速に進行する技術革新と社会変化の中で、産業保健が今後どのように発展し、人と社会をどのように支えていくのかについて、具体的かつ実践的な視点からお話しいただきます。
