[I-OR01-01]Keynote Lecture : Beyond Pediatric Cardiology and Adult Cardiology: The Unique Science of Adult Congenital Heart Disease

Advances in pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, and intensive care have transformed congenital heart disease (CHD) from a life-threatening childhood condition into a lifelong disease, resulting in a rapidly growing population of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). However, ACHD is neither simply an extension of pediatric cardiology nor a subset of adult cardiology. It has emerged as a distinct discipline shaped by the complex interaction of congenital anatomy, prior interventions, biological adaptation, aging, and acquired comorbidities.
Even patients with the same congenital diagnosis may have markedly different anatomy, physiology, clinical trajectories, and outcomes. As the ACHD population ages, clinicians face increasingly complex challenges, including heart failure, arrhythmias, pulmonary vascular disease, pregnancy, and multimorbidity, many of which remain incompletely understood.
Through illustrative clinical cases, this mini-keynote will explore why ACHD represents a unique scientific discipline and why dedicated research is essential to understanding the lifelong evolution of congenital heart disease. Ultimately, improving outcomes for ACHD patients requires moving beyond the traditional boundaries of pediatric and adult cardiology to generate the evidence needed for lifelong care and healthy aging in this growing and diverse population.
