With the purpose of producing high-grade copper sulfide (Cu2S) directly from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) or Cu sulfide ore, a fundamental study on the selective chlorination process using cuprous chloride (CuCl) as a chlorinating agent was carried out. In the experiments, CuFeS2 or various types of Cu ores were reacted with CuCl in the presence of sulfur (S) or without S in a quartz crucible at 900 – 1100 K for 5 h under an Ar atmosphere. The iron in the CuFeS2 or Cu ore was selectively removed as ferrous chloride (FeCl2), and high-grade Cu2S was directly obtained in a single step. Owing to the removal of iron, the mass percentage of Cu in CuFeS2 and Cu ore was increased from 36.8 % and 39.8 % to 76.6 % and 66.6 %, respectively, and the iron removal ratio was 98.0 – 99.5 % under certain conditions. It was thus demonstrated that selective chlorination using CuCl is a feasible method to produce high-grade Cu2S directly.
