Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as chloroethylenes, chloroethanes and benzene cause groundwater and soil pollution. We have studied treatment of VOCs in groundwater using the sunlight and organic acids included in waste. In our previous study, we showed that the photodegradation rate of trichloroethylene (TCE) increased in the presence of tartaric acid included in waste and ferric ion, and ferric ion. The acceleration of TCE degradation is due to generate strong oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical by the photoreaction of ferric tartrate complex.
In this study, we investigated photodegradation of various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) utilizing tartaric acid included in winery waste and ferric ion. In order to investigate the mechanisms of VOCs degradation, we also carried out the experiment of VOCs photodegradation with chemical reagent grade tartaric acid and ferric ion.
With the addition of winery waste, some VOCs degradation rate increased, and the others VOCs degradation rate did not. The results indicated tartaric acid concentration is important factor for VOCs photodegradation with ferric ion, and the effectivity of tartaric acid depends molecular structures and differing in the number and location of chlorine atoms of VOCs.
