Fine char (-1 mm) produced from the pyrolysis of shredder residue is a potential source of fuel due to its carbonaceous content (22%). However, the ash constituent in the char is quite high and recycling at this stage is not very common. In this study, mineral processing techniques, which includes size reduction, magnetic separation, and froth flotation were employed to recover carbonaceous and other valuable materials from the char. The recycling flow started from the separation of -100um char by sieving with a looped feed from the ball mill, followed by magnetic separation, froth flotation, and CO2 bubbling. This process was intended to improve flotation efficiency, remove ferrous material, ash and chlorine content respectively. The increase of carbonaceous content up to 36% at 90% recovery can be achieved in the final concentrate of froth flotation using 0.5 L/t MIBC frother and 3 kg/t kerosene collector dosage.
