Urban mining has gained increasing attention as a sustainable approach for recovering valuable metals from electronic waste, particularly waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs). These materials are rich in precious metals such as gold (Au), making them an attractive secondary resource. Among various leaching methods, thiosulfate leaching has emerged as an environmentally safer alternative to conventional cyanide leaching. This review summarizes recent studies on gold extraction from waste PCBs using thiosulfate and evaluates current purification and recovery strategies for gold-thiosulfate complexes. Key purification techniques include ion exchange, adsorption, and solvent extraction, while recovery methods such as cementation and electrowinning are assessed for their effectiveness. The review also highlights challenges associated with the separation of gold from thiosulfate solutions. This paper aims to identify effective and environmentally compatible methods for selectively purifying and recovering gold from thiosulfate leachates, considering both technical feasibility and sustainability. By compiling and evaluating recent advancements, this review provides insights into the development of more efficient and sustainable hydrometallurgical processes for gold recovery from electronic waste.
