This paper investigates the cooperation gain of an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system in which two single-antenna users sharing a short-range side channel cooperate to form a virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter. Adopting a signal-alignment-based MIMO framework for uplink NOMA, we propose a cooperative scheme that combines singular value decomposition (SVD) precoding with channel-adaptive NOMA power allocation to equalize per-stream SINRs at the base station (BS). Simulations under external interference show that the proposed scheme can reduce the outage probability by a factor of 6 compared with the non-cooperative baseline at a moderate transmit power of 25 dBm, or save about 3.8 dB of transmit power at the $10^{-3}$ outage level. In addition, it improves the ergodic sum rate, showing that user cooperation improves both link reliability and spectral efficiency.
