Bioresource Research Center (BRC) at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) was established in 2013 to recruit and store biospecimens and clinical data from consented patients of TMDU hospitals. Over 23,000 biospecimens that include genomic DNA, serum, fresh frozen tissue samples, or formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples have been stored as of March 2022, that are linked to clinical information retrieved directly from the Electronic Medical Record System. These samples are available for distribution to both internal and external researchers with appropriate approval from Institutional Review Board (IRB). In order to become a bank that not only collects and manages, but also utilizes and produces results, TMDU BRC has launched a joint clinical research with private companies. This enables us to establish comprehensive genomic profiles of highly prevalent cancers within the Japanese population and promote the utilization of biological resources by adding value to them. Here, we will present the latest information on biobanking activities of TMDU BRC, including the results of the analysis of cancer patients obtained from the joint research.
