In order to understand correlation between structure and function for hydrogen recombination catalysts, we observed in situ and time-resolved X-ray absorption fine structure of the catalysts at Pd K- and Pt L3-edges. We have found that the surface oxide layer of the metal nanoparticle plays an important role for the hydrogen recombination reaction.
