We considered alternative methods of retrieval operation for the HLW repository concepts, the horizontal placement and PEM method, when the waste cannot be retrieved as PEM. Results of process analysis, the procedure for retrieving the waste from the PEM as an overpack would add to the existing procedure the in-situ opening of the PEM steel shell, which is approximately 30 mm thick.This report provides an overview of the technical development to present the technical feasibility of alternative solutions, including subsequent operations such as buffer material removal and overpack removal.
