The cause of the disappearance of concrete at the foot of the RPV pedestal during the severe accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 was investigated through a literature review. In addition, high-temperature heating tests of aggregate, which accounts for about 75% of the concrete, were conducted to study the melting and softening behavior of several types of aggregates. As a result, it was found that the melting and softening behavior differed depending on the type of aggregate.
