Oxide dispersion strengthened Cu (ODS-Cu) alloys fabricated using the mechanical alloying (MA) process possess high thermal conductivity, superior strength and resistance to neutron irradiation, making them promising heat sink materials for the divertors in fusion demonstration power stations (DEMO). High ductility of Cu makes the MA process difficult, resulting in inefficient production of ODS-Cu. This study aims to improve the productivity of ODS-Cu alloy powders in the MA process through new material designs. Novel Cu-Hf alloys have been proposed and the presentation will focus on the effect of WO3 addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys.
