Until the 1990s, reduced-activation austenitic steels were studied alongside ferritic steels for nuclear fusion reactor. However, they were eliminated as candidates due to concerns about their irradiation resistance and environmental resistance. Recently, however, there has been a demand for non-magnetic steels from the plasma side. Then we have identified the potential to overcome the previous weaknesses through a re-examination of alloy design and ODS technology.
