At the Nuclear Science Research Institute of JAEA, low-level β/γ solid waste, excluding combustible waste, is treated at the Advanced Volume Reduction Facilities (AVRF), consisting of the Waste Size Reduction and Storage Facility (WSRSF) and the Waste Volume Reduction Facility (WVRF). Large waste is cut in the WSRSF’s waste size reduction area, and mixed-material waste is separated by type in the WVRF’s Pretreatment System. Metallic waste generated from research reactor is processed by a super compactor, reducing volume to one-fourth with about 2,000 tons of pressure. Since hot operations began in FY2008, about 1,700 drums have been processed by FY2024. This presentation reports findings from cold testing and results from hot operations.
