Raman spectroscopy was applied to a fuel debris sample that had been experimentally retrieved from TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, for analysis of solid phases of the debris. By comparison with spectral data previously obtained in previous studies using simulated debris, Raman bands attributable to (U,Zr)O2, t-ZrO2, and spinel-type oxides were observed. In studies on aging behavior using simulated debris, the formation of uranyl peroxide and uranyl hydroxide has been reported; however, no Raman bands indicative of these species were detected so far in our analysis.
