JAEA is developing a technology to adjust the particle size distribution of dry recycled powder using simulated MOX powder to consistently obtain high-density MOX fuel pellets.Defective MOX pellets are jet-milled and reused as raw material, but coarse powder or a wide particle size distribution lowers the sintered density. Therefore, the powder must be adjusted to an arbitrary, narrow distribution matching the sinterability of raw MOX and uranium powders. In this development, jet-milled simulated powder was classified using a cyclone classifier. The test demonstrated that optimizing classification conditions successfully adjusts the dry recycled powder to the desired narrow particle size distribution.
