A conceptual design study on a pyroprocessing facility for LWR spent oxide fuel was commenced. As an enhancement to conventional pyroreprocessing for metal fuel, the facility employs two distinct processes: the first is dismantling and decladding for the recovery of oxide fuel from the fuel pins, and the second is an electro-reduction process for converting the oxide fuel to metal fuel. The process utilizes two hot cell systems: air for oxide de-cladding, and Argon (Ar) for metal conversion and later processes. Recovered TRU is destined for fast reactor metal fuel, and excess uranium is stored metallically. The feasibility study for commercial scales (100 tHM/y and 400 tHM/y) confirms that the established pyroprocessing facility allows for LWR fuel reprocessing.
