We investigated the transfer behavior of radionuclides during melting treatment for decontamination and clearance of metal waste generated at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS. Simulated radioactive waste was taken as carbon steel, representing materials used in flange tanks, with added surrogate nuclides selected with reference to contamination data of actual waste. Melting experiments were carried out in the presence of slag primarily composed of silica, calcia, and alumina. A graphite electrode arc furnace was employed as a typical scrap melting furnace, together with a heater furnace enabling precise temperature control. The results allowed experimental determination of nuclide transfer ratios, defined as the fraction of surrogate nuclides transferred to the metal ingot after melting relative to their initial amounts.
