Unveiling the Mechanisms of Hibernation through Non-Invasive Metabolic Monitoring

Hibernation is a physiological state in some mammals where metabolism and body temperature are actively suppressed during winter. Hibernating animals drastically reduce oxygen consumption and body temperature, yet recover without damage. This "regulated hypometabolism" differs from passive states, such as general anesthesia, and could theoretically allow humans to survive with significantly reduced energy demands and minimal cardiopulmonary function.<br><br>In 2020, we demonstrated that stimulating QRFP-producing neurons (Q neurons) in the hypothalamus induces a hibernation-like state in mice, termed QIH (Q neurons-induced hypometabolism). QIH allows hibernation to be induced on-demand, enabling controlled studies of hibernation mechanisms and their physiological effects.<br><br>This presentation highlights insights gained from non-invasive respiratory gas analysis, which enables high-resolution temporal metabolic monitoring. We will discuss how these findings enhance our understanding of hibernation regulation and explore their potential implications for synthetic hibernation and medical applications.
