The cochlea of the inner ear: the unique physiological architectures and their relevance to hearing loss

In the cognitive process of sensory perception, sensory information is integrated through the selection and extraction from information at the level of peripheral sensory organs, followed by the integration of top-down and bottom-up information in the central nervous system. During this integration process, interactions between multiple sensory modalities bring about simultaneity and modulation of sensations. In addition, errors between sensory information and predictions based on internal models contribute to sensory modulation. However, the details of such integration mechanisms are still not clear. This symposium brings together researchers focusing on various hierarchies and various sensory modalities to discuss the overall picture of the sensory system. Through the symposium, it is expected that the common rules of sensory information processing will become apparent. Furthermore, this symposium aims to widely publicize the purpose and latest achievements of the AMED-JST collaborative area "Multisensing" to researchers in anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
