Translational Research Utilizing <em>In Vitro</em> and <em>In Vivo</em> Study Models Through Human Tumor Tissue in Oncology Drug Discovery

In the field of drug discovery, there is a growing demand to improve the extrapolation of non-clinical data to clinical studies. This is necessary because there are often high dropout rates during clinical development, leading to a significant waste of R&D resources. Particularly in the field of oncology, the use of human tissues such as organoids and patient-derived tumor transplantation models has become increasingly crucial. Utilizing human tissues allows for the reduction of species differences and the acquisition of data with superior functional relevance.Furthermore, advancements in molecular biology and cell biology have provided insights into the immune cancer cycle, encompassing tumor growth, metastasis, invasion, and tumor cell death. Consequently, methods for drug discovery in oncology have evolved. It has also been reported that cancer stromal cells, including paraneoplastic macrophages and cancer-associated fibroblasts, play a vital role in cancer growth. Understanding the interaction between cancer cells and the surrounding stromal cells is of particular importance.In this symposium, the latest scientific advancements and technologies will be discussed, including evaluation systems that focus on the tumor microenvironment using human tissues.
